Aaaahhhh yes, I remember it all quite well. And..your right reality will soon sink in as to how the real world really is. I wish the best for Josh, and I hope every wish he is making comes true. Good to hear from you too, and hope all is well. Cyndi is going into surgery this coming Monday, yeah...getting that contraption called a expander out...life is good and we are so blessed, and feel blessed meeting you here. Thanks for sharing and enjoy this time. Bob
1. Maybe, just maybe, someone will read this and it will help. 2. I want to remember details so I can be active in my recovery, and so there is a REASON why this happened to me. 3. Something good has to come out of it. That is all there is to it!
"Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.”
Right now, the only "about me" thing that I can think about is "adenoid carcinoma of the breast." But I am already a survivor, as I have survived the diagnosis!
Ok--it has been 6 months so I have decided to add to this ABOUT ME section because although I still think of cancer daily, I am more than my diagnosis. Here's a tidbit: married for almost 19 years to Jim; two boys, Andrew 17 and Josh 15; one black lab named Shade; high school assistant principal; former English teacher...um...I like to eat???
This is an old picture from a few weeks ago. Kait asked Andrew to the Winter Formal with this sign. She's so darling!!!
The elusive Josh
As always, my photos of Josh are of him either running from the camera or walking out of the shot. He was all bundled up to go skiing. How do you like the ping pong table in my family room. Yes, it's the WHOLE family room.
An exhausted Josh on the big comfy red couch. It's the only way I can take a picture of him!
Finally, a picture of Josh. This was taken in Chicago at Manny's Deli and Josh got something NEW so I had to take a picture. He doesn't normally wear glasses but his contacs were back at the hotel.
The Twins
They are so funny. Do you know who is who? I have a trick but won't share it with anyone. HA
Niles vs. Clay
I wanted to see how far my little camera could shoot. I shot this from the top of the bleachers. The guy with Andrew is his buddy Conrad.
Talon
Talon always supports Andrew at his games and at this game he insisted that the Clay Colonial mascot was Andrew. When Danny showed him the REAL Andrew, he said "well, there is two Andrews then. The Colonial had a HUGE head with a mullett so why he thought he was Andrew we have no idea.
Brawley Family Christmas, January 1, 2009
I loved using my new camera but the memory filled up too fast. I have to get a bigger card.
the love of my life--Nimmy--puts the green and red sprinkles on the frosted sugar cookies. My kitchen is a mess but what else is new! (If you see the soy sauce, that was from my chicken fried rice, a New Year's Eve tradition from the night before.
Brawley Family Christmas--
We had to wait to celebrate Christmas with Jim's mom and dad until New Year's Day because of Pooh's work schedule. Here the kids wait while presents are passed out.
Aunt Mimi always gets each child a Christmas ornament. this year she brought "golden walnuts" in which each child wrote a wish for the future. Mimi then sealed the walnuts and labeled each child's. We agreed to open them in 2020.
Love my little Zoe. Pooh's daughter opened up her gifts from Gramma and Grandpa. Each year, Ginger takes each grandchild shopping for their gifts and to a restaurant of his/her choice. Zoe picked out lots of Hannah Montana clothing and chose Lunkers as her restaurant. Is she not the cutest thing?
Josh writes his wish for his golden walnut ornament.
Spiderman, aka Talon chose a Spiderman bike, complete with a helmet and knee pads. He rode his tricycle throughout Gramma's house.
Jake relaxes in all his new Under Armour gear. We decided he could be a new spokesman for them!
Ninja Quinn looks through all his cash. We got Quinn one of those cameras for the woods so he can see how many deer are wandering around in the middle of the night. The plan is to find a Bigfoot costume to make things a little more interesting for Quinn. : )
Uncle Danny "borrowed" a sqeaky balloon thingy that flies allover the house screeching very annoying noises. I think Talon chose those.
Josh waits patiently for his turn. He got a cool snowboarding hat and money money money. He chose Famous Dave's for his lunch.
We love having Kait at our Christmas! We let Andrew and Kait sit on the couch since they are official adults now. : ) Andrew looks really skinny for some reason.
A Quick History
February 2007 Found the lump. It was painful. March 2007 Diagnostic Mammogram--NOTHING shows up Ultrasound--NOTHING shows up April 2007 Visit surgeon, since lump is still there and is painful. Decide to wait 3 months and cut out caffeine July 2007 Lump still there and hurts. July 19, 2007 Diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma after biopsy on July16; tumor didn't look encapsulated...which was "worrisome" Triple Negative, which all ACC is... PET/CT scan-- shows nothing, including remaining tumor in breast MRI--shows nothing in either breast, including remaining tumor August 7, 2007 Lumpectomy. Couldn't get clear margins. Sentinel nodes were negative. September 7, 2007 Simple right mastectomy; tissue expander inserted during surgery. 6.1 cm tumor. (STUPID BIG!!!)Stage III because of size of tumor. No chemo or radiation because it doesn't work on ACC/breast. September--February 2008 Weekly saline injections for reconstruction February 7, 2008 Silicone implant placed. March 2008 follow up tests with oncologist. March 31, 2008 mammo normal, chest x-ray and CT normal August 2008 Areola tattooed on September 2008 MRI of left breast--negative for cancer; negative chest xray ordered after chronic cough. Scheduled PET/CT for March, along with mammo on both breasts October 2008 Tattoo is "settled' and color deemed satisfactory. Scheduled nipple procedure for 12/12/08. December 12, 2008 New nipple sewn. Easy process but it is really ugly. December 18, 2008 Breast exam with Dr. Kalinowski. All is good. Next appointment with her is in June of 2009. December 30, 2008 Nipple check. Looks very good according to Dr. M. Have to go back in February for a follow up for nipple, and also a one year follow up for my Memory Gel implants. March 12, 2009 Mammo of left breast clear. PET/CT negative for anything. (They did a big scan of my neck to look for the salivary cancer and to make sure my schwannoma wasn't growing) Blood work normal! See onco in September for chest x-ray and blood work.
Andrew's Senior Pictures
I love this kid!
Summer UP 2008
Summer photos for your enjoyment...I didn't take too many.
The weather rock in Rockland
Every Wednesday we go to Rockland for "build your own pizza". Outside Henry's, the bar where this takes place, is the weather rock. If it's dry it is sunny, if it is wet it is rainy, etc. I make the kids take a photo evey year.
The three loves of my life
After a loooooong day of fishing, the boys show off part of their catch. In the background you can see the famous barn on the property.
Andrew and Kait
This picture does not do them justice. Kait was gorgeous--Andrew said he'd rather be wearing a baseball uniform.
Junior Prom--beautiful day, beautiful kids
Demi, Dan, Bryanna,Nate, Kait and Andrew, Sarah, Chris, Jenna, Zach, Rachel, Asaad, Rachel, Javier
Abuse
This is the back of Josh's leg. He was hit by a pitch in his first high school baseball game. Poor thing, I rarely post pictures of him because this is all he lets me take pictures of...bruises and goofiness. That's my Joshie.
Andrew and Kait
Aren't they cute? I wish I had a photo of Josh but he spent most of the night running from my camera. This was taken before the Winter Formal.
Little League World Series
Andrew signs autographs after going 3-3 against the European team. Too cool!
Andrew
I forced Andrew to smile for me. This is on the night of his Counterpoints concert, an elite show choir at NHS. Notice the $8,000 teeth.
UP Photos
Below are some various photos from our cabins in the UP. Enjoy!
Johnny and Pam's quarters
This is a room in the upstairs house. It's very large and fits two double beds. Pam's family sleeps here.
A New Tradition
Connor and Matt write what they are thankful for on a new tablecloth that Pam brought up. She plans to embroider what we all wrote (uh...that will take her forever probably) and will bring the table cloth each year.
Josh, who else?
This is Josh, being his usual silly self, at the top of the steps at the old house. He wore those red flannel pants with black labs all over them the entire time there.
Another tradition
Danny and Andrew face off in chess. There must have been a good football game on too since Danny is obviously watching something. Danny won by the way.
Shopping in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin
Pam, Brooke, Ginger, some tall wooden dude, Aida, Jake, Zoe and Willow and Skyler pose with some wooden dude outside The Fisherman's Wife, a cute boutique.
The girls are so calm...
Zoe and the twins did a lot of coloring at Gramma's house. This is taken in John and Ginger's house, which we call the "newer" house.
The lodging
This is half of the basement where most of us sleep. Those red tags you see on the wall are turkeys with the name of the person who is to sleep in the bed. Connor colored all the turkeys.
The parade
These horses were part of the parade in Eagle River. Kinda cool how you can see the down town in my rear view mirror.
Final pre-implant pic
Look how much bigger right boob is than left boob. It sit up so much higher. New implant will be smaller and "droop naturally" I just hope it is softer!
The 12 pound lasagna
Another tradition, albeit only three years old, is Pam's lasagna that she makes Saturday night when we are there. It literally weighs twelve pounds. There is not one person there who doesn't agree that it is the best lasagna ever made. This picture is in the little kitchen in the old house. There is very little counter space so most cooking is done on that little table.
Let the frenzy begin
Chris is writing what he is thankful for on the tablecloth as we slowly fill the tables with food. I want you to know that Chris and I washed all those plates and dishes you see on these tables!
The Barn
This is the most awesome barn. You can't really see this but on the white cinder block at the base of the barn anyone who visits gets to paint a block with their name, their thoughts, whatever. Crazy Mil's idea of course.
Frozen Heaven
This is the road leading back to the houses. You can see the barn at the end of the road. To the right are woods that surround Johnson Lake. That little black looking path of sorts is frozen water that surrounds the lake. Why I thought it necessary to get the car in the photo I don't know.
The three most important people to me
We took a walk one sunny day to the back of the property. You can see the older house in the background of the picture.
The new image.
Ok, this is one week post op. My left boob is a bit squished in the sports bra that I'm wearing, but I wanted to document the ski slope (tissue expander) bulge on the right side--my right side. You can see a bit of the Pizza Pocket, which is the small pointy bulge closest to the cabinet.
The Crazy In-laws
Back in the day I was stupid enough to go fishing with John Brawley. As you can see, this boat isn't all that big. This is the day that the sun went away quickly, and huge storms started up. Since we didn't have our limit, we had to stay on the lake. Only after Ginger and I told John to "GET US OFF THIS F'ING LAKE" did he take us in. Crazy Mil, crazy back then, decides Josh should play in the water in this picture.
My hunting blind (in the house)
I took this picture a few years ago from the front window of the house. Beyond the doe is Johnson Lake.
She Who is a Survivor
Lemons to lemonade. This woman is a survivor. When opportunity knocks, It sometimes knocks her down, But this woman never Lets it get her down for long. Whether it be relationships, Her health or her professional life, Her reservoir of love and faith Emerges as a triumphant shining example. She is a woman who truly knows the value of Family, friendship and the gift of time. Laying aside all judgment And giving unconditional love.
From my dear friend Betty; written by Suzy Toronto, 2002.
'Rew, Fhat Gladden, Tyler Jackson and Kevin Gross representing Niles at the Little League World Series.
It's so good to say goodbye.
Ok, so I am a goofball. But I want to document everything. This is PRE-SURGERY. If you look real close on the right side, you can see the scar from the lumpectomy. Look at the droop on the left one! EGADS.
This is NOT my dog, but has to be the cutest thing on earth. I just love this picture so I decided to steal it and put it on my blog.
